Depends who you ask

The world is a nicer place in some areas, and dismal in others.

Medical & Pharmaceuticals
• Yeah we can cure you, if you have access to $$, or can live in debt.
• More lives saved means more toll taken on the environment no matter how eco-friendly we try to be.
Technological advancements consequences: The future is Wall-E.

School shootings and american kids are failing.
Pay gap increasing.
Jobs going oversees
STDs on the rise.
Bees dying.
Endangered species & extinctions
Global Warming
Child abuse on the rise
Drug abuse (prescription and illegal) on the rise
Cancer Rates Increasing
Nuclear waste... just pollution in general
Mental disorders on the rise (though it could be the same, and just over diagnosed, but that's pretty crappy too)

I don't think the world is getting better or worse really, I think it's neutral. It fails in one area, but progresses in another...until a catastrophe happens, then it's like The Hunger Games.

Kudos to Social Justice though, those are a counter balance to the depressing stuff I mentioned... but again, we're screwing up the planet and all of this will be meaningless at some point.
